Coconut oil

Some may argue that coconut is a fruit, while others may argue that it is a vegetable. One of the derivatives of coconut is coconut oil. The oil has quite a number of benefits to overall health, human hair and skin. Coconut oil is also used in the home environment.

Benefits of coconut oil

As mentioned before, coconut oil is beneficial in some ways. Briefly discussed are some of the uses of oil from the tropical product:

  • Coconut Oil for Hair: Coconut oil has a unique fat composition, and this is beneficial to hair. The oil can be used as a mask in hair or as a natural homemade hair product.
  • Skin nourisher and moisturizer: Coconut oil is great for skin and has been used by many as a natural skin moisturizer. Coconut oil has natural antioxidant properties which make it ideal for preventing skin wrinkling and irritation from the sun.
  • Digestion: Beneficial fats such as Omega three are found in coconut oil, and they are helpful for digestion. Coconut oil also has antimicrobial functionalities which can help wade off infection in the gut from bacteria and fungi. Not only does it help in digestion, but it is also a rich source of healthy body fats. Close to half of the fat in coconut oil contains lauric acid. Lauric acid is an essential component of breast milk and is used for growth and development.
  • Mental benefits: Research has shown that Medium Chain Triglycerides such as those found in coconut oil have a positive influence on focus and mental performance.
  • Immune system support: Medium Chain Triglycerides in coconut oil have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral capabilities that act as enablers and support the body’s immune system.

Uses of coconut oil

Coconut oil can be used in different disciplines for different purposes. Coconut oil can be used in the beauty industry, at home, and in the health industry among others. Briefly discussed are some uses of coconut oil:

  • Cooking and Recipes: Coconut oil is used for baking, stir-frying, seasoning and coffee emulsification. Coconut oil is added to food or fruit juices and smoothies to provide energy. Lactose intolerant individuals can use coconut oil as an alternative to butter in cooking. Mayonnaise can also be made from coconut oil. The high content of Lauric acid in coconut oil helps boost metabolism and is thus preferred when preparing foods. Healthy recipes such as coconut clusters are readily available and sold as kids’ snacks.
  • Beauty Uses: Beauticians use coconut oil for massage purposes and as a basic skin lotion. It is also used in combination with other oils as a cleansing regimen. Shea butter and coconut oil have a soothing feeling on the body hence used as a soothing body balm for massage. Coconut oil’s antibacterial properties are helpful in fighting odor, and for this reason, it is used as a deodorant. When used topically, coconut oil makes a good and natural low SPF sunscreen. The oil is also used in lip balm formulations.
